Shockwave Therapy Machine Mechanism Of Action
Shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal
tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regeneration
and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues.
Shockwaves are characterized by jump change in pressure, high amplitude and non-periodicity.
The kinetic energy of the projectile, created by compressed air, is transferred to the transmitter
at the end of the applicator and further into the tissue.

There are two forms of shockwave: focused and radial. These forms differ in physical
characteristics and their method of production. Focused shockwaves affect a small, precisely
defined area, travel deeper and carry higher energy; whereas radial shockwaves affect a
larger, more diffuse area, do not travel as deeply and carry less energy.

Are There Any Side Effects?
ESWT is not known to cause any significant adverse effects. However, potential
complications are pain and hypersensitivity at the site of treatment, which usually
resolve very quickly.
What Is The Procedure Like?
A hand-held probe is placed over the area of greatest tenderness and the shockwaves are
delivered over a duration of approximately 20 minutes. Occasionally, mild transient
discomfort may be felt at the treatment site, thus if necessary, topical local anaesthetic
cream may be applied prior to treatment.
How Many Sessions Are Required?
Patients usually require 5 to 6 weekly sessions and overall, the healing response takes 6
to 8 weeks. Between treatments, patients are able to perform their usual daily activities.
